The new minister for the Advancement of Women and Social Development, Nidia Puelles, resigned from her post only four days after taking office (a record) after corruption charges were levelled against her. She was accused by several legislators belonging to the ruling party Peru Posible of malfeasance during her stint as director of two state organisations, the Organismo Regional del Sur and the Instituto Nacional de Bienestar Familiar. Puelles replaced Anel Townsend, a popular former minister, when Toledo named his new Prime Minister Carlos Ferrero last week. Puelles, in turn, has been replaced by the sociologist Ana María Romero.
