VENEZUELA: Chávez challenges opposition

President Hugo Chávez yesterday challenged the opposition radicals, known as the Bloque Democrático, to follow through on their promise to launch an uprising if they could not force him out through a recall referendum. He called the radical group 'a dog which barks but does not bite', and appealed to what he called the moderate opposition to forget about the referendum and focus on the gubernatorial and municipal elections, scheduled for August. He said that he knew that the majority of his opponents were against the radicals' threat to use violence.
