Tourism expanding steadily. The wave of violence affecting the country's two border and tourist areas such as Acapulco has not been deterring tourists. The number of foreign visitors in the first eight months of the year reached 15.1m, or 10.3% more than in the same period of 2004. As many as 40% of the tourists came from neighbouring countries. An even greater increase (15.3%) was recorded in earnings from tourism, which rose to US$8.4bn - with average spending increasing by 2% to US$698. Mexico's tourism balance again showed a substantial surplus, of US$3.3bn, 16% greater than in the same period of last year.
