COLOMBIA: Spying exposé strains ties with AUC

Relations between the government and the paramilitary Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) reached a new low last week when it was revealed that the paramilitaries had succeeded in enticing leading security officials to set up an intelligence service for them. As this scandal led to resignations and dismissals, the AUC embarked on a ploy to force the government's hand regarding Diego Murillo ('Don Berna'), the group's previous 'inspector-general'.
