COSTA RICA: Figueres admits receiving US$900,000

Development: On 27 October José Maria Figueres Olsen, the country's third former president to be accused of corruption, admitted receiving US$900,000 from Roberto Hidalgo Araya, an advisor to Figueres during his period in office (1994-1998). In the press release he sent to the Costa Rican daily La Nación, however, he makes no mention of source of the money - the French telecoms giant Alcatel - and defends the legality of the payments.
