ARGENTINA | Unemployment shrinking. The open unemployment rate in the last quarter of 2005 was 10.1%, one percentage point lower than in the previous quarter and two points down on a year earlier. As usual, this calculation counts the 1.4m recipients of the heads-of-households subsidies as employed. If they are added to the ranks of the unemployed, the fourth-quarter rate rises to 11.4%. The national statistical institute, Indec, reports that 11.9% of the economically active population are under-employed.
