MEXICO: Calderón plays the Chávez scare card

Felipe Calderón, candidate of the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), managed to make headlines last week, just before the elections in the state of México (Edomex), with the suggestion that Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez may be financing the campaign of Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD). Some analysts read this as a tit-for-tat move; others as a sign of desperation in the face of evidence that López Obrador is pulling decisively ahead of the pack.
