BRAZIL: More scandal, but Lula still leads

Two more opinion polls show President Lula da Silva headed for victory in the 1 October elections, but the most recent scandals (a new one surfaced last week) have clearly rattled Lula and his party. Lula has fired his campaign manager and, while dissociating himself from the plot to smear leading opposition candidates [WR-06-37], has begun to talk about a conspiracy to remove him from office by any means. The ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) has taken to blaming the media rather than those responsible for the scandals.
