Oil finances 'are Calderón's biggest challenge'. President-elect Felipe Calderón's biggest challenge will be managing Mexico's 'dependency on oil prices', predicts Eduardo Sojo, a member of his transition team. 'Anything that happens on the oil markets affects us very significantly, particularly in the area of public finances,' he said last week. He says that though many sectors of the domestic economy (construction, housing, commerce and services) are growing, there is still 'much to do' regarding the items which rely greatly on the US market.
