Scandal costs Lula victory in the first round

The latest scandal involving members of President Lula da Silva's Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) affected the results of the Brazilian presidential election on 1 October. Lula, who appeared in all opinion polls as the overwhelming favourite to win in the first round three days before the vote, will now have to face a runoff against the opposition social-democrat candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, on 29 October.
