CHILE: Bachelet tables pension-reform plan
Perhaps driven by a determination not to allow the death of General Augusto Pinochet to distract her from elaborating government policy, President Michelle Bachelet outlined the details of an ambitious reform of the pension system on 15 December. Some of the main amendments advanced in the bill sent to congress involve modifying the private pension fund (AFP) system established in 1981 by Pinochet and considered to be his most positive legacy.
