Chávez seeks to fuse rival factions to pave way for new socialism

The president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez , is trying to bring together the competing factions within the Chavista movement. He hopes that the formation of a new party, the Partido Socialista Unitario de Venezuela (PSUV), will enable him to forge ahead with his ill-defined "21st century socialism". It will also allow him to exert more control over the 21 disparate groups within the ruling coalition.
