PARAGUAY: Lugo throws hat into the ring

Fernando Lugo will compete in the presidential elections in 2008. Lugo, a Roman Catholic bishop who shot to prominence in March 2006 when he organised a big protest against President Nicanor Duarte, ended speculation about his political aspirations on 21 December by resigning from his position as the emeritus bishop of San Pedro, the dirt poor northern department. He announced his candidacy on Christmas Day.
