GUATEMALA: Ten years on, peace remains distant

Guatemala reached a significant landmark on 29 December: the tenth anniversary of the signing of a peace accord which brought to an end the 36-year civil war. The former guerrilla group, Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG), which became a political party in 1998, refused to take part in the official events marking the occasion on the grounds that little had been achieved in the last 10 years.
