JAMAICA: Christie banks on economy to win in the Bahamas

Prime Minister Perry Christie has called general elections for 2 May. He is emphasising his government's stewardship of the economy, which grew by 4% in 2006, in order to see off the challenge from the opposition Free National Movement (FNM) and its leader, former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham (1992 to 2002). Christie claimed a decisive victory over Ingraham in 2002, when his Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) won by 29 seats to seven.
