The elections for delegates to the constituent assembly will be held on 30 September. That, at least, is the plan. Before then, Ecuador seems intent on succumbing to what the national daily El Comercio described as "institutional cannibalism". The constitutional tribunal (TC) finally waded into the debate over the removal of 57 opposition deputies from congress on 7 March by the supreme electoral tribunal (TSE). It ruled, by six votes to three, that 50 deputies (the other seven did not appeal to the TC) should be restored to their positions. President Rafael Correa ignored the ruling. Congress, currently composed largely of legislators loyal to Correa and alternates who replaced the 57 deputies and consequently owe their positions to Correa, then voted to sack the nine magistrates on the
