President Daniel Ortega is accusing the US of funding efforts by the domestic opposition to create a united front against his government. The "conspiracy", which Ortega condemned during a ceremony commemorating the 112th anniversary of the birth of Augusto Sandino on 19 May, involved a meeting between the three men he defeated in last November's presidential elections: José Rizo, Eduardo Montealegre and Edmundo Jarquín, of the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC), Alianza Liberal Nicaragüense (ALN) and Movimiento Renovador Sandinista (MRS) respectively.
