GUATEMALA | Bumper sugar harvest. Guatemala's sugar harvest for 2006-2007 (November to May) broke all previous records, weighing in at 47.1m quintals (45.45 kilos), up more than 13% on the previous harvest.
Armando Boesche, the director of the national sugar producers' association (Asazgua), said the sector had made a strong recovery from the ravages of Hurricane Stan in October 2005. He attributed the record harvest to an 8% increase in the area set aside for sugar cane, to 213,000 hectares in total.
