The opposition failed to win enough support in congress for its motion of censure against defence minister, Juan Manuel Santos. Santos received the backing of 168 congressmen out of a total of 231 who voted on the motion in the plenum on 13 June. It was a good result for the government of President Alvaro Uribe, coming on the back of the decision by the G8 to issue a short statement last week praising his "audacious and brave" decision to free imprisoned Farc guerrillas to try and effect a humanitarian exchange.
