The scandal surrounding the economy minister, Ricardo Patiño, is not going away. Days after Patiño went before congress on 5 June to defend his decision to record a video of his meeting with two security brokers to expose "the dark side of external debt deals", another video came to light. This showed Patiño in talks with the president of congress, Jorge Cevallos, in a hotel about political matters. Patiño said this second video was taken without his authorisation. The problem for the government is not so much the content of the video but the fact that it was recorded at all. The opposition is portraying Patiño as a latter day Vladimiro Montesinos, and pushing for him to go. President Rafael Correa is firmly behind him.
