The G8 agreed on a small number of steps to tackle global warming during its latest summit in Germany last week. Brazil's President, Lula da Silva, joined the summit on its last day, together with fellow leaders of leading developing nations. Lula welcomed climate change discussions but attacked proposals to make developing nations accountable for global warming. Lula was adamant that "it is not fair to ask the developing world to stop growing and trying to achieve the same quality of life enjoyed by richer nations". His declaration underlines Brazil's predicament of how to promote economic development while at the same time protecting its environment.
