Gangsters gunned down a controversial local politician, Mario César Ríos Gutiérrez, in downtown Monterrey on 12 June. Ríos had been involved in some shady dealings (involving first marijuana and then stolen cars) but was probably not as connected to the drug trade as his brothers -one of whom was mayor of their home town, Cerralvo. It seems likely that Ríos, a state assemblyman from the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), was killed as part of the war between the two gangs, Golfo and Sinaloa.
