ARGENTINA | Falklands decree. President Néstor Kirchner signed a decree on 8 June agreeing to pay 14,000 veterans of the Falklands war a total of Arg$500m (US$161m). Veterans will now receive, together with their pensions, between Arg$25,000 (US$8,130) and Arg$30,000 in cash to make up for the pension payments and health benefits they did not receive for nearly a decade after the war. Relatives of soldiers who died in the conflict will also receive payments. "The State's debt to the former combatants is eternal from the moral and institutional point of view because they were long disowned by the State itself," Kirchner said.
