María Emma Mejía Vélez, Colombia

Who is she? Mejía is the newly designated secretary general of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) who, in conjunction with Venezuela's electricity minister, Alí Rodríguez, will replace the deceased former Argentine president Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007).

Why Watch her? In an interesting decision, Mejía's term as head of Unasur will be only for one year, as opposed to the normal two year term, after which she will be replaced by Rodríguez. Importantly, she is the first to assume the general secretariat after the Unasur treaty has come into full effect.
