The two candidates competing in the presidential run-off on 4 November,
Alvaro Colom, of the centre-left Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE), and Otto
Pérez Molina, of the rightwing Partido Patriota (PP), are courting the support
of the ruling coalition, Gran Alianza Nacional (Gana). Gana presidential
candidate, Alejandro Giammattai finished third in the first round of elections
with 17.2% and the party gained a total of 37 seats in congress (out of 158) and
78 out of 331 mayoral seats (in both cases, second only to the UNE). Pérez
reckons that alliances with Gana leaders could translate into some 300,000 votes
obtained by the ruling party in the first round.End of preview - This article contains approximately 518 words.
