After two decades of negotiations, the UN general assembly has finally
approved a declaration on the rights of indigenous people. Only four countries -
the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand - opposed the declaration and 11
abstained, including Colombia, the only Latin American country not to approve
it. The text underlines the right of indigenous peoples to self-determination,
lands, territories and resources, as well as protecting indigenous languages,
culture and identity. It also commits states to provide resources for
employment, education and health.
