Efforts to secure a humanitarian exchange with the Fuerzas Armadas
Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) turned truly international this week when
several US Democrat congressmen appealed to President Alvaro Uribe to be allowed
to take part in the meeting between Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez and Farc
representatives in Caracas on 8 October. The US Assistant Secretary of State for
Western Hemisphere Affairs, Thomas Shannon, said that the US supported Chávez 's
mediation efforts while the US ambassador to Colombia, William Brownfield, said
the US would be prepared to consider any "concrete conditions" from
the Farc for the release of three State Department contractors held hostage
