President Lula da Silva opened the UN's 62nd General Assembly earlier this
week. As expected, Lula defended the use of ethanol and biodiesel, fuels of
which Brazil is a leading producer, as part of a solution for global
environmental problems. To strengthen his argument, Lula mentioned the Brazilian
government's results against deforestation in the Amazon and Brazil's capacity
to produce both biofuels and food concurrently. Recently released figures on
deforestation and inflation of foodstuffs in Brazil, however, somewhat
