GUATEMALA: Alliances take shape

With less than two months to go until the presidential run-off between Alvaro Colom of the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) and Otto Pérez Molina, of the Partido Patriota (PP), both candidates are stepping up their efforts to forge alliances. Pérez appears to have met with more success. While the presidential candidate for the ruling coalition, Gran Alianza Nacional (Gana), Alejandro Giammattei, has yet to officially announce support for the PP, the local media now treat this as a given. Colom, meanwhile, is courting the former militiamen of the Patrullas de Autodefensas Civil (PAC).
