CHILE: Pinochet corruption case is boon for Bachelet

The police arrested the widow of General Augusto Pinochet, his five children, and 17 of his closest military and civilian confidants on corruption charges on 4 October. Pinochetistas argued that the resolution, issued by Judge Carlos Cerda, was politicised, coinciding with the release of a poll showing President Michelle Bachelet's approval rating falling to a new low of just 35%. The arrests certainly appeared like a media stunt when Cerda decided to grant all the accused provisional freedom on bail 48 hours later.
