There was always a danger that relations between Colombia and Venezuela would deteriorate if the mediation process brokered by President Hugo Chávez ended in any way other than the release of the hostages held by the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc). The moderation of Chávez 's initial response to the abrupt termination of his role by his Colombian peer Alvaro Uribe swiftly gave way to an unedifying exchange of diatribes between the two heads of state who despite ideological differences, had enjoyed a good rapport. By 28 November Chávez was vowing to have no relations with Colombia while Uribe remained in power. Diplomats in Caracas and Bogotá will have their work cut out repairing the breach.
