ECUADOR: Constituent assembly begins work

At the time of writing, on 29 November, the constituent assembly is poised to meet for the first time in the purpose-built facility in Montecristi and begin drafting a new constitution. On the eve of the assembly's inauguration congress voted to go into recess for one month. Legislators had previously decided not to go into recess in order to fight the imminent dissolution of congress by the constituent assembly. Assembly delegates representing the government's majority bloc, Acuerdo Paí­s, met to discuss the agenda for the first day. They did not reach an agreement over when to disband congress.
