BOLIVIA: Morales modifies stance on GM crops

President Evo Morales has once again upset his support base and seen his professed green credentials called into question. Last week he promulgated a law aimed at boosting food security, which allows for the extended use of genetically modified (GM) seeds in the country. A reflection of pressure to reduce Bolivia's dependence on food imports, which has driven up prices, the move signals a reversal of a May 2010 presidential decree stipulating a five-year transition period to phase out GM crops altogether.
