When former president Tabaré Vázquez created the ‘Día del nunca más' (‘Never Again Day') in 2006, he envisaged it drawing a line under the "horror of the recent past [to] salve the open wounds left by the dictatorship". Five years on and it is a safe bet that the ‘Never Again Day' will in fact never be celebrated again. President José Mujica made no reference at all to the day, which was created to coincide with the anniversary of the birth of Uruguay's liberator, José Gervasio Artigas, on 19 June. Stung by the negative fallout from the failure of the ruling Frente Amplio (FA) coalition to push through a bill to strike down the amnesty law shielding those who committed human rights violations during the dictatorship (1973-1985), Mujica focused simply on Artigas as a unifying figure.
