It was perhaps fitting that the name Emmanuel should attract international
attention at Christmas. President Hugo Chávez masterminded a mission, codenamed
"Operation Emmanuel", to collect the eponymous three-year-old boy and
his mother Clara Rojas from the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc).
Senator Consuelo González completed the trio of hostages. Before the 12 days of
Christmas were up it had ended in farce: the Farc discredited; Chávez
humiliated; and President Alvaro Uribe vindicated in his distrust of the Farc.
As this issue goes to press, however, another rescue operation is being mounted
after Chávez announced that the Farc was ready to hand over Rojas and González.End of preview - This article contains approximately 570 words.
