After weeks of speculation, president-elect Alvaro Colom finally unveiled
his cabinet less than a week before he takes office on 14 January. Having
initially promised to reveal his ministerial team at the start of December,
Colom's postponement of the announcement was reportedly due to power struggles
within his party, the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE). While his final
choices reflect a mixture of both his declared commitment to "social
democracy" as well as financial support received during his political
campaign, critics have flagged up as cause for concern the lack of diversity;
the new cabinet features only one woman and one indigenous person.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1065 words.
