Piñera makes bold move to recover popularity

Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera made a clear bid to try and reverse his declining popularity this week by sending to congress a bill to recognise same- sex civil unions. The bill is a progressive move in the most religiously reactionary country in Latin America, but it is also bold in the sense that it could cause a political conflict just as the government is struggling with popular protests. It has already caused tension within Piñera’s ruling coalition.
