ARGENTINA-REGION: Smug Fernández hails economic solidity

“The world is in freefall and who knows when it will end. In 2009, lots of people announced disaster and yet here is Argentina, still on its feet, with record production, the best minimum wage in Latin America and paying its debt,” Argentina’s President Cristina Fernández boasted at a rally on 5 August. Fernández was speaking after the historic downgrade of US debt from triple A by the rating agency Standard & Poor’s, and in the face of tumbling markets in the US and Eurozone. The pro-government Página/12 sought to reflect her words at the weekend by adorning its front page with a map of the Western Hemisphere inverted; Argentina and Uruguay sitting proudly on top and the US and Canada at the bottom.
