ARGENTINA: Fernández crushes challengers

She might have suffered a few setbacks in provincial elections in recent weeks, but President Cristina Fernández annihilated her rivals in Argentina’s first national primary elections on 14 August ahead of October’s general elections. Her victory was emphatic by any measure. Fernández won more than 50% of the vote nationwide; she was beaten in just one of Argentina’s 24 electoral districts; she finished comfortably more than 30 percentage points ahead of her nearest challenger; she won in nearly all of the country’s urban and rural centres and she won the social network war, receiving more Twitter mentions than all of her rivals combined. There were no crumbs of comfort for the divided opposition.
