CHILE: Something is rotten in the state of Chile

Something is wrong with Chile’s political system. President Sebastián Piñera has indirectly admitted as much by calling for a profound political reform which could lead to a constitutional change and the end of the current binomial system, a legacy of the Pinochet dictatorship. Piñera’s haste to push through political reform is a consequence of his dwindling approval ratings and his government’s loss of authority in the face of concerted protests by students stubbornly sticking to their guns in demanding guaranteed free education for all.
