ARGENTINA: Old problem; piecemeal solutions

While the government of Argentina’s northern province of Jujuy, led by the Kirchnerista Walter Barrionuevo, hailed the launch of the “one plot for every family that needs it” programme as a step forward towards the resolution of land-related tensions in the province, squatters are still in control of 70 large tracts of land seized shortly after the conflict began 26 days ago. Just like in previous land-related conflicts in the city of Buenos Aires and in the province of Formosa late last year, confrontations in Jujuy have cost several lives; the government, despite its claims to the contrary, has always reacted to land conflicts rather than addressing the issue before it explodes into social protest. It is estimated that of Argentina’s 40m inhabitants, a quarter live in makeshift homes.
