NICARAGUA: Campaigns kick off

President Daniel Ortega marked the official start of the campaign period, ahead of the 6 November general elections, with the handover of 1,239 property titles to impoverished families in Managua. This obvious appeal to the roots of the left-wing Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) belies the lack of real ideological difference between the electoral platforms of Ortega and his two main right-wing rivals, businessman and radio personality, Fabio Gadea of the Unidad Nicaragüense por la Esperanza (UNE), and former president Arnoldo Alemán (1997-2002) of the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC).
