ARGENTINA: Glimmerings of an industrial policy

On output statistics, Argentine industry looks as though it is doing OK. In the first half of 2011, industrial output was up 8.5% year-on-year. In June, however, output was only 0.1% above May, despite some strong figures from the construction sector (which was up 2.7%). The response to the figures by both the federal government and the city government of Buenos Aires has been to try to promote particular industries: the federal government has chosen computer technology, while Buenos Aires has chosen pharmaceuticals.
