OIL: Venezuela now number one, but Brazil looming

On 19 July the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) reported a 12.1% annual increase in its total proven reserves to 1.9bn barrels (b) in 2010. Venezuela overtook Saudi Arabia as the number one reserve holder in the 12-country bloc. More significantly Brazil, currently the region’s third biggest oil producer and like the second biggest, Mexico, not an Opec member, will match Venezuela’s daily output of crude oil, perhaps as soon as 2015.
