The anniversary of her first six months in power had not yet passed when Costa Rica’s President Laura Chinchilla faced a major test: a border dispute with neighbouring Nicaragua [RC-10-11]. Remarkably, according to a March poll by the local pollster Unimer, Chinchilla’s handling of the dispute is, in the eyes of most Costa Ricans, the biggest achievement of her first year in power, with 46% of respondents identifying this as her main success.
