EL SALVADOR: Funes throws kitchen sink at organised crime

A form of war tax on the rich and compulsory military service for teenagers who might otherwise slip into mara gangs. President Mauricio Funes is trying everything he can think of to combat organised crime in El Salvador and to improve public security. Funes delivered his second state-of-the-nation address on 1 June against a backdrop of mounting concern about public security, as well as the economy. The main right-wing opposition party, Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena), argued shortly beforehand that El Salvador needed a new peace accord to overcome the scourge of organised crime.
