HAITI: Martelly’s reconciliation pledge rings hollow

In what was the first ever peaceful transfer of power from one democratically elected Haitian president to another from the opposition, Michel Martelly was inaugurated as Haiti’s 56th head of state on 14 May. Weeks into his historic mandate, little evidence has emerged regarding his victory pledge of “reconciliation and unity” which, with the legislature controlled by the Inité of his predecessor René Préval and Martelly’s party holding just three seats in the 99-member lower chamber, is essential to making good his other electoral promises of increasing access to education, boosting employment and strengthening the rule of law.
