Panama’s electoral authorities (TSE) last month approved the incorporation of the five year old Unión Patrióta (UP), one of the lesser members of President Ricardo Martinelli’s quadripartite Alianza por el Cambio, into his Cambio Democrático (CD) party. The AC’s other minor partner, the Movimiento Liberal Republicano Nacionalista (Molirena), has announced plans to follow suit, ending 29 years of political life. The mergers see the CD overtake its main coalition partner, the Partido Panameñista (PP), to become the second biggest party in the country in terms of membership, trumped only by the opposition Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD).
