PERU: Alarm over 'gang war’ threat in Callao

Alarm began to spread in Callao, Peru, in late August as media reports citing police intelligence sources said that a local gang, ‘Los Nole’, was buying assault rifles, machineguns, pistols and grenades to defend itself from an expected attack by their rivals of the ‘Malditos de Castilla’ gang. This scenario, which the police have tried to dispel, arose from the acquittal of three ‘Noles’ who had been accused of murdering the leader of the ‘Malditos’ — an event that has already triggered an official investigation of the judge handling the case.
