On 9 September Mexico’s President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa reshuffled his cabinet as key members quit to stand in different elections next year. Ernesto Cordero, the finance minister, finally resigned, a day after presenting the budget to congress, in order to compete for the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) presidential nomination for 2012. Politicians and political commentators assume that he is Calderón’s choice to succeed him. One sign of this was that Cordero launched his campaign for the nomination from the PAN’s offices in Mexico City.
